The lids are usually examined with the slit lamp aperture wide open. This illumination is often called diffuse, however, it is actually direct illumination. The microscope and light source are both focused at the same point. To get true diffuse illumination a diffuser must be placed in front of the slit lamp beam.
Either type of illumination is adequate for examination of the lids and an overall survey of the anterior segment.
